乒乓球星级的分类不是按硬度、寿命等来分，而是按品质误差率来分的，在乒乓球生产的过程中，一星二星三星是没有区别的，只是在品质检测时，按重量、弹性等指标误差率进行分类，如不超过国际标准百分之多少算三星，不超过多少算二星，其他的（次品除外）按一星标记和售卖。
有兴趣的可做一测试，拿同星级的球在相同高度落下，三星级弹起的高度肉眼分不出差别，其他的误差率大些，至于硬度和寿命等因素，不同品牌的乒乓球受材料工艺等限制略有区别，但同一品牌应该区别不大。

好象是在30厘米高度自由落体落在球台上，北半球时向右自动旋转分别为270、180、90度来判断的，旋转的角度越小球越圆星级越高。南半球旋转向左。
